What Is the Disaster Recovery Allowance?
The Disaster Recovery Allowance (DRA) is a short-term income support payment provided by the Australian Government through Services Australia for employees, sole traders, and small business owners whose income has been directly affected by a declared natural disaster. It is intended to tide eligible individuals over while they get back on their feet financially.
The DRA is not a permanent payment — it is paid for a maximum of 13 weeks from the date the disaster affected the area, and it is only available when the Australian Government activates it for a specific disaster event.
What Disasters Can Trigger the Allowance?
The DRA is typically activated following major declared natural disasters, including:
- Bushfires
- Floods and cyclones
- Earthquakes and storms
- Other significant natural events declared by the relevant state/territory and federal government
Not every natural disaster triggers the DRA. The federal government must make a specific decision to activate it for a particular event and affected area. Services Australia maintains an updated list of current activations on its website.
Who Is Eligible?
To qualify for the Disaster Recovery Allowance, you generally need to:
- Be an Australian resident or hold an eligible visa
- Have been employed, a sole trader, or a small business owner at the time of the disaster
- Have experienced a direct loss of income as a direct result of the disaster
- Live or work in a declared disaster-affected area
- Not be receiving another income support payment (such as JobSeeker) for the same period
The payment is means-tested against your pre-disaster and current income.
How Much Is the Disaster Recovery Allowance?
The maximum rate of the Disaster Recovery Allowance is equivalent to the maximum rate of JobSeeker Payment (or Youth Allowance if you're under 22). The exact amount is updated periodically and depends on your personal circumstances, including whether you have dependants.
The payment is taxable, and you'll need to declare it in your tax return for the relevant financial year.
How to Claim
- Check if DRA is activated for your area: Visit the Services Australia website or call 180 22 66 to confirm the allowance has been activated for your disaster event and location.
- Gather your documents: You'll need proof of identity, your Tax File Number, evidence of employment or business activity prior to the disaster, and evidence of income loss (such as payslips, tax returns, or business records).
- Submit your claim: Claims can be made online through myGov (link your Centrelink account) or in person at a Services Australia service centre. Dedicated disaster recovery claim lines are often set up for major events.
- Attend any required follow-up: Services Australia may contact you for additional information or documentation.
Other Disaster Support Payments
The DRA is one of several support mechanisms available after a natural disaster. Depending on the event, the following may also be available:
- Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP): A one-off lump sum payment for people severely affected by a disaster (e.g., serious injury, loss of home). This is separate from the DRA and targets the most severely impacted individuals.
- State and territory grants: Many state governments offer their own emergency relief grants, clean-up assistance, and concessional loans for affected residents and businesses.
- Community Recovery Hubs: Physical centres often set up in disaster-affected communities offering coordinated access to government services and support agencies.
If You're in Immediate Financial Crisis
If you're facing an immediate financial crisis after a disaster and cannot wait for a formal payment, contact Services Australia about Crisis Payment or speak with a social worker at your nearest service centre. Many non-government organisations such as the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and St Vincent de Paul also provide emergency relief in disaster-affected areas.
Always refer to the Services Australia website or call the dedicated disaster assistance line for the most up-to-date information on activated payments and how to claim for your specific event.
